Kara Islington weighed 236 pounds when she found out she was expecting her first child. “I was absolutely thrilled to be pregnant, but because of my size, I felt a great deal of anxiety and doubt,” the plus-size mom of two admits. “My brain raced with questions. Was my pregnancy doomed to develop complications? Would my doctor lecture me about my weight? Should I go on a special diet? What about exercise? I wondered whether stores even sold plus size maternity clothes ! I was a basket case.”

These same concerns are echoed among an increasing number of expectant mothers. Leading health organizations strongly advise women to lose excess weight before they conceive or else face an increased risk for such prenatal complications as gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, and preeclampsia. Despite these warnings, almost half of all pregnant women in the US and Canada are overweight.

If you are a plus-size mom-to-be, can your pregnancy still progress problem-free?

“My weight did not stop me from having a completely normal pregnancy,”“I refused to spend nine months worrying about what could go wrong. Instead, I focused on taking excellent care of my physical health and emotional well-being.”

You too can experience a healthy plus-sized pregnancy. Here are some important bits of advice for plus-sized moms.

Find the sweet spot of fit and fabric

When it comes to how your garments should fit, going to extremes – either skintight or oversized and tent-like – won't be as flattering as clothing that skims your body and nips in at all the right places.

Look for gathers, drawstrings, and ruching in strategic locations, as well as fabrics with just a touch of Lycra (not the amount you'd find in a pair of workout tights or bike shorts).

Length Does Matters

Stick to maternity dresses and skirts that hit you just at the knee. Anything longer than that can make you look dowdy and shorter; higher up may be exposing a bit too much leg. A to-the-knee garment hits the sweet spot – giving you a lengthening, elegant look. This is especially important if you're petite and plus-size – a few inches too long can really drag you down.

Feel The Fabric - Layer a few soft pieces

Garments made of soft, flowing materials drape more smoothly over your body than bulky or tightly woven ones. Think silk jersey (or silk with a touch of Spandex), cotton blends, or lightly woven sweaters that hang gracefully down your body instead of clinging and squeezing.

Layer a few soft pieces, such as a silky or jersey tank top and a long, loose cardigan of a silk/cotton knit or jersey fabric, over a classic bootleg pant with a bit of stretch in it for a pulled-together, flattering look.

Embrace V-necks

Embrace V-necks and other decolletage-baring (but not too low-cut!) that draw the focus up to your neck, shoulders, and face, and create a longer line to your body overall.

Wrap-style tops are especially curve-friendly, and you can adjust the wrap tie as you grow. The deep V at the neck created by a wrap is very alluring.

Extra tip: Be aware of where the shoulder seam falls on your tops. A too-droopy seam isn't as flattering as one that lines up more closely with your actual shoulder joint.

Accentuate While Still Staying Comfortable.

Add shape to an otherwise too-billowy dress or a borrowed button-down shirt with a belt. Try a skinny leather one or even a beautiful piece of ribbon you've picked up from a craft store. Fasten it just beneath your bust to accentuate your ribcage while still staying comfortable.

Embrace Prints Wisely

Just because you're plus-size and pregnant doesn't mean you have to avoid patterns and color. Embrace them, but use them judiciously. Add a pop of bright color to an outfit with a scarf, bag, or a camisole layered under a neutral cardigan.

When it comes to patterns, stay away from extremes. Steer clear of huge flowers or teeny, tiny floral prints, for instance. Both aren't nearly as flattering as a more eye-catching medium-size design splashed over a scarf or a tank top under a jacket or cardigan.

Stay Away from Short

Stay away from capri-length or three-quarter-length pants. They're hard to pull off and not the most flattering hem – regardless of your size. To create the illusion of endless legs, make sure the hem stops an inch or two above the ground, ideally smack in the middle of your shoe's heel.

Pairing perfectly hemmed pants with a low-heeled, slightly pointy shoe (not rounded, which can make your legs look stumpy) adds further length to your figure. If you're devoted to flats, have your pants hemmed to stop just an inch above the floor.

Go For Definition And Clean Lines

Look for a top that ties in the back so you can adjust it as you grow. This will also help delineate your bosom from your bump, giving your shape more definition and clean lines.

Work the Monochromatic Magic

When it comes to your shoes, boots, and tights, stick to the same colors to create a long, lean silhouette. Ditto for leggings and flats in the warmer months. Pair black leggings with black slides or sandals for a more seamless appearance from hip to toe. our little black dress has arrived woohoo.........................

Accessorize!

Now's the time to dig through your scarf and body jewelry collection. Layering long necklaces or draping a long, skinny scarf around your shoulders adds verticality to your figure. As you get further into your pregnancy and your baby bump grows, big chunky, layered necklaces or chandelier earrings will help balance out your overall look.

Pay attention to where your handbag hits you. Ideally, it'll fall right around your waist or even as high as your ribcage, to draw attention away from your rear.
