These same concerns are echoed among an increasing number of expectant mothers. Leading health organizations strongly advise women to lose excess weight before they conceive or else face an increased risk for such prenatal complications as gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, and preeclampsia. Despite these warnings, almost half of all pregnant women in the US and Canada are overweight.

Find the sweet spot of fit and fabric

When it comes to how your garments should fit, going to extremes – either skintight or oversized and tent-like – won't be as flattering as clothing that skims your body and nips in at all the right places.

Look for gathers, drawstrings, and ruching in strategic locations, as well as fabrics with just a touch of Lycra (not the amount you'd find in a pair of workout tights or bike shorts).


Length Does Matters

Stick to maternity dresses and skirts that hit you just at the knee. Anything longer than that can make you look dowdy and shorter; higher up may be exposing a bit too much leg. A to-the-knee garment hits the sweet spot – giving you a lengthening, elegant look. This is especially important if you're petite and plus-size – a few inches too long can really drag you down.

Embrace V-necks

Embrace V-necks and other decolletage-baring (but not too low-cut!) that draw the focus up to your neck, shoulders, and face, and create a longer line to your body overall.

Wrap-style tops are especially curve-friendly, and you can adjust the wrap tie as you grow. The deep V at the neck created by a wrap is very alluring.

Extra tip: Be aware of where the shoulder seam falls on your tops. A too-droopy seam isn't as flattering as one that lines up more closely with your actual shoulder joint.

Accentuate While Still Staying Comfortable.

Add shape to an otherwise too-billowy dress or a borrowed button-down shirt with a belt. Try a skinny leather one or even a beautiful piece of ribbon you've picked up from a craft store. Fasten it just beneath your bust to accentuate your ribcage while still staying comfortable.

When it comes to patterns, stay away from extremes. Steer clear of huge flowers or teeny, tiny floral prints, for instance. Both aren't nearly as flattering as a more eye-catching medium-size design splashed over a scarf or a tank top under a jacket or cardigan.


Stay Away from Short

Stay away from capri-length or three-quarter-length pants. They're hard to pull off and not the most flattering hem – regardless of your size. To create the illusion of endless legs, make sure the hem stops an inch or two above the ground, ideally smack in the middle of your shoe's heel.

Pairing perfectly hemmed pants with a low-heeled, slightly pointy shoe (not rounded, which can make your legs look stumpy) adds further length to your figure. If you're devoted to flats, have your pants hemmed to stop just an inch above the floor.

Look for a top that ties in the back so you can adjust it as you grow. This will also help delineate your bosom from your bump, giving your shape more definition and clean lines.

Pay attention to where your handbag hits you. Ideally, it'll fall right around your waist or even as high as your ribcage, to draw attention away from your rear.
